So, what's up with you? Me, I'm damn busy. I've been filling every extra second with Data Matters work. It's a fantastic project, it's really got me excited to build something that will provide results and quickly. We've already got some very interested partners and our test customers have been ironing out bugs and keeping their data secure and retrievable in the event of data disaster.
I ordered a new laptop this week, mine's becoming tempermental and not working very well or for very long while unplugged. I ordered a Dell XPS 1710. Looks pretty sexy and it's got the fastest mobile processor Dell is selling right now. It's billed as a gaming machine, but other than the video needs of gamers, the processing power is what developers and gamers both need. I was most impressed that it has a DVI (digital video interface) and RGB video connection. I can't wait to get it and hook it up to two monitors and have them on either side of the high-res 17" LCD on the laptop. Screen real estate is very important to me. I love having a monitoring montior, a central developing monitor, a monitor for web/email, and a monitor for the output of what I'm developing. But three will do.

Why hasn't this been updated lately? Too busy having fun and/or working. Nice summer we're having.

Some people will steal anything that's not tied down. Actually, some people will steal stuff that is tied down! In Wasaga Beach on Friday night some jackass stole the bike carrier off of the back of my car! The person who did it is either a cheap asshole or more than likely just a punk ass kid with too much money and not enough attention from mommy and daddy. Honestly, who steals a bike rack? You probably don't even have a car or a bike you inconveniencing shit! Now I have to take my bike apart and soil the inside of the car to get the damn thing home. If I ever meet you I'll punch you straight in the eye for the bother you've caused me and you can keep the stupid bike carrier. Ass!

Rainbow on the Hanlon Parkway, Guelph, ONme on my unicycle     Very nice drive down the Hanlon to go pick up Brianne from the barn this evening. I didn't want to leave the comfort of my programming den because I was getting some serious development done on the backup program's self updater, but the pretty sky and the fact that I might get to unicycle once I get there were little perks. I think it's the first time I've seen a 50% circle rainbow.
I would really like to work from home tomorrow but there's a stupid and pointless staff meeting tomorrow so I have to be there since I've been put on the first four agenda items.

Michael and Caroline Kerfoot     Quite the weekend! We spent 90% of it preparing for and going to Brianne's friend Caroline's wedding. Brianne's Mom's best friend Euince is Caroline's aunt and since they were the first of the kids in the circle of friends and they've been hanging out since they were little. I was surprised how many people that were there that I knew. Brianne and I went to a corn roast a couple of years with most of the same people so I'd already met most of them there. The funniest part of the evening was the fact that no one recognized Brianne. Deirdra, another one of Brianne's Mom's friends actually recognized me first and then made the connection that the person with me must be Brianne. It was the oddest thing. We had a good time, we were sat at a table with Caroline's friends from Western and we all got along really well.
Once I had a nice long nap this afternoon, I went out to play on the unicycle. I can almost get on from standing every time now. It's just a matter of time before I'll be riding around the neighbourhood on one wheel.

I'm trying a new spam strategy, mostly because it's driving me mental. I've been running the spamvertizements that I've been getting into the Bayesian database, but it doesn't seem to matter. So I updated all of the spam protection on my box and then I added in an optional bit that wasn't on before. The Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse, from what I've quickly gathered, has a list of spammy checksums for messages, and it works with SpamAssassin, it just has to be uncommented in your v310.pre file. We'll see what happens.

My Yahoo account isn't trapping some spam either. I wonder if they have those special domain key permission thingys. I have had to just block a couple of domains recently. The spam has also been leaking through at work lately.

Actually, I finished installing it when I posted that and I've only had one spammy item and it was in russian or something since. Compared to the 10 or so I got yesterday afternoon/evening. Overnight's the big test. Lately in the morning I've had around 20 to trash. They aren't even being caught by GMail's spam protection either. I'm on the cutting edge of spam reception apparently.

It was a relatively simple task. Take a weekend and go into Algonquin's backcountry canoeing. Tom and I set a date a long time ago and said that this is when we'd go. We started getting prepped, training for the big day. Then earlier this week, Tom got a training injury. That is to say that Tom got Bellitis. Bell called him up and said; "Hey, you've got Bellitis and we're going to lock you away for the weekend and it's going to be the same weekend that you were planning to go away with Ian! Sucka!".
So, since I'd set aside the time and put in all of the training, I was determined to go. I borrowed Rob's canoe and Beth's cottage backs on to an Algonquin access lake and she let me use her place as a launch point. I drove all the way up, bought my permit for the two sites I was going to stay on and then packed up the canoe and headed out. Getting the dog into the canoe proved more of a challenge than I expected. The first couple of times I tried to lift her in, she thought I wanted her to jump over it, so she did just that, into the water.
Once the dog was finally in the canoe and understood that it would be a really good idea not to move, we headed out across Hay Lake. When we were over half way there, the wind picked up and because there's only one of me, it quite easily turned the front end of the canoe into a sail. If I was closer to the edge of the lake, that wouldn't have been an issue, but since I could, I just wanted to go straight to the first portage of the trip. As soon as the wind and waves picked up, Cricket went from sitting calmly to shaking and shivering and the rain got harder too. So after trying to fight it until I was tired, I gave up and fought that same wind all the way back to Beth's cottage. The whole process took way longer than it should have because it takes longer to steer and to paddle than it does if you have one person paddling and one paddling and correcting the steering. I called people to make sure it was okay that I stayed here and so it looks like I'm going to be hauled up here until the rain gives out and my permits are a donation to Algonquin for services I haven't used. If the weather wisens up tomorrow, I think I might try again. I'd really like to get out to the interior again, if not, I've got my laptop and my blackberry's got digital signal so I've got dialup speeds without occupying the cottage's party line and there's more than enough stuff to keep me busy here.
Now, I just wish I brought some beer, wings and chips for tonight.

So yesterday, I was going to meet up with Tom and on the way there, the traffic was crap. Not because of the lightning or impending storm, because of a stalled tractor-trailer in an on-ramp lane at the 410 on the 401. Totally un-necessary slowdown. Anyway, the lightning provided quite the show and as I was nearing Mavis, a big bolt hit really close. Then when I got up to McLaughlin Rd. I saw that there was a hole about 30 centimetres in diameter and it was smouldering...

The pictures aren't great, but you get the idea. When I finally got to Mississauga, we had to leave because the lightning had driven up the static and given some of his equipment a seizure, so he had to go to fix it.
